Prove Yourself Worthy (Sample Chapters)

PROVE YOURSELF WORTHY

Wayne Anderson is a highly successful man. A billionaire. A business tycoon. But there was one stain in his story - he was once married and his wife cheated on him. They divorced and it was a messy affair. It has been a few years since that happened and Wayne has been putting all his focus on his empire. That is, until he met Andrea Payne. She seemed ordinarily clumsy but she has this air of confidence about her as she kept proposing business ventures one after another to him. She was hoping he would help.

Chapter 1 – First night

Her hands clutched the sheet beneath her as he mastered her body.

Andrea’s breathing turned heavy and irregular. She’s not sure whether she’s supposed to breath or not in certain moments. When he touched her, she caught her breath. When he roughly squeezed her breasts, she caught her breath again.

“That’s it. Let them hear you.” He whispered against her skin. His mouth pressing wet kisses on her naked body. And then, he captured one breast into his mouth and sucked. The bolt of pleasure that went through her body was dizzying. She’s no virgin but her previous encounters were nothing like this. Those were clumsy, messy and total embarrassments. She hadn’t felt any pleasure, only pain.

But now… her hazy gaze searched for his face. She reached out to touch his hair and guide him as he tasted her body. He moved from one breast to the other and it was bliss to her. She gasped and moaned loudly as his fingers delved inside her folds. Ever since he started touching her, her body quickly responded. She’s wet and ready for him. His actions produced such a noise, flesh slapping wet flesh. His fingers dived deeper inside her with every thrust and she couldn’t help the moans and screams that escaped her mouth as her body reached an orgasm. He didn’t stop. He continued with his ministrations. His hold on her turned rough and it caused a bit of pain. Bearable. Pleasurable. She no longer cared about the noises she’s making. That’s what he wanted anyway.

Wayne Anderson. Her husband. It has been two weeks since they got married. Today, they visited his parents and they were invited to stay the night. He told her that it’s probably a ploy to see how they would be spending it.

“You better be screaming tonight.” He whispered against her ears even before they started. At first, she was puzzled. What does he mean? Now she knew.

There must be ears against the door or pressed against the walls. She’s screaming alright. She’d gone to great heights of pleasure. When he finally towered above her, pushing her legs farther apart, she knew what was to come. She agreed to it. And now that it’s happening, she can’t lie. She actually likes it. He’s definitely skilled in the bedroom and could give a woman real pleasure.

She was supposed to proposition him, but he propositioned her instead.

Her family is on the verge of bankruptcy. Her father trusted yet again another scammer. Oh, he was someone they knew for a very long time. One they consider family. And yet, he went away taking all their money. Or at least, the money in her father’s businesses. He has three. Had.

Andrea had known Wayne since they were kids. They were neighbors. A few times, she used to go at their house and play with him and his sisters. He’s older than her by five years, but she’s fascinated by the boy’s toys. That’s the main reason Wayne tolerated her as a child. There were no other boys in the house and she’s his only playmate.

They grew apart. Her family moved to another place. She lost contact. When Aria went to college, she haunted Andrea through various social media platforms. Even so, she only reconnected with her and Annie. Wayne? No. There’s not a thing they could’ve talked about. She’d heard news about him and his success. And then, there was that scandal about his wife. Well, ex-wife. When he found out that the child she gave birth to was not his, they divorced. It was such a sensational news back then. Afterwards, he had become more successful in business. When dealing with him, you’re never to bring up his past.

When she witnessed her father’s broken figure, she decided that she must do something. Her father is a good man. She sighed. Too good, in fact, that some people abuse his kindness. It wasn’t the first time he was swindled. He’s too trusting of people. But then, some of them are people they’ve known for so long, they wouldn’t really have thought anything was amiss. She couldn’t let him suffer through it.

Andrea sought Wayne’s help. He’s a good man. She knew that much. And he’s highly successful. Built a business empire on his own, for his own. A person whose name yearly appears in the list of young billionaires. He’s not exactly young. He’s already thirty-five. But still considered a young age to attain and maintain his billions.

She thought he might be able to spare her family some, or better yet, help them out. When she asked Aria and told her the idea she had, the other woman shrugged.

“I haven’t talked to my brother in months. Last I saw him was during father’s birthday. But he’ll definitely remember you.”

Not entirely assuring but it’s a chance. It might or might not be successful but it’s worth a try.

When she showed up at his office, his eyes were blazing as he looked over her. She quickly introduced herself and she saw a flicker of recognition in his eyes. Then, she stated her business. A business proposal. She prepared for weeks. When she gave him the copy, he barely looked through it as she started her pitch.

It was clear that she’s nervous. By the end of it, she almost gave up. She changed tact and acted like a close friend coming to ask for help. Which she technically is, but they’re not exactly close friends. She mentioned Aria and Annie, his sisters. She narrated the problems they had in the last two months and how she and her family is trying to start again. She already sat on the couch, almost comfortably as she informed him of everything.

At some point, she realized something is not right. He should be very busy. He wouldn’t have time to listen to her, but here she is… talking for almost half an hour already. She briefly glanced at her wrist watch. She’d also been watching his expressions for any sign of irritation. She’s ready to exit at any hint of annoyance. She dared not offend him. When she stopped talking, he glanced up to stare at her without saying anything. How many hmm had she received since she came in? Not a single actual word came out of his mouth.

“I know you’re busy, so I’ll show myself out now. Please consider this proposal. Even if you don’t accept, if you can suggest a few things that would improve it, I would deeply appreciate it.” She clasped her hands together as she slightly bowed while walking backwards towards the door.

“Then, thank you for your time.” She was hoping that he would at least acknowledge her words. Nothing. She smiled in a light chuckle before exiting. She’s not entirely embarrassed. She’s prepared to be embarrassed when she walked inside his company building. Thankfully, Aria informed his secretary about her which gained her entry and appointment. At least, she wasn't thrown out when she showed up.

She sighed when she reached the ground floor, prepared to walk through the exit.

What happens now? She smiled to herself as she glanced at the tall building.

Well, back to the drawing board.

Chapter 2 – An underlying attraction

Wayne pounded into her as her cries echoed around the walls. He thought it might take a while before he can have her but she proved to be ready and willing. She didn’t resist. She reacted sweetly to his every touch. When he entered her, it seems her insides were sucking him in. She was tight and her warmth was pleasurable to him. Her body and skin were too soft. She was very pliant. He grunted against her neck as he spilled his seed inside her. Her body trembled beneath him and she whimpered after shouting in ecstasy. She was panting against his ears. He’s not finished with her yet, though. Only now did he realize how brilliant his decision was. She would be a nice companion in bed. But of course, she’s his wife. New wife. For a moment, he was reminded of the previous one and his expression darkened.

Andrea didn’t notice anything as she’s too exhausted to move and open her eyes. Her body was still reacting to his movements, though. Soon, she could feel him thrusting inside her again and she couldn’t help moaning as she touched his waist. She didn’t have the energy to cling unto his body. She let him continue and do what he wants. She feels so full inside and she could feel his heat, and the warmth that exploded inside her. That’s right. She agreed to bear his children. In the last two weeks that he hadn’t touched her, she was a little confused. Didn’t he say he wanted me to have his child? She wasn’t exactly looking forward to it, but… he’s a very attractive man. She realized as much. Making love with someone like him couldn’t be so bad, she thought. Now, she can prove it to be true. She did have a bit of a crush on him when she was a child.

When she stepped into his office, he had just gotten off the phone. His mother had been pestering him for some time already, telling him to get a new wife and start a family. His parents are getting old and they want grandchildren. He snorted as he looked down at a document, right before Andrea walked in. She was confident the moment she stepped inside his office, but it clearly deteriorated given his lack of reaction. As he kept alternating between her and the proposal she handed over, a plan was formed in his mind. A proposal, huh? Why don’t he make one?

He remembers her, of course. That child who followed him around, playing with his cars, tanks and army soldiers. Oh yes, there was that toy gun that she accidentally used on herself. That was the most stupid thing he’d ever seen, but it was so memorable in such that she went home crying with a red dot on her forehead. His mom, upon hearing what happened from the neighbors, took his toy gun and smashed it to pieces.

He can say that she grew up beautifully. Her face retained her exquisite features.

By the time she finished talking, he still hasn’t finalized how to propose such a thing to her. He needed a woman. One that his mother would approve of. She’s bound to remember Andrea. His mother liked her as a child, a playmate of her daughters. She will do.

With such a plan, he couldn’t risk picking up a random woman from the street, or from a club. He doubts he could trust another woman with his heart and with his life. Never again would he be lied to and betrayed. He promised himself that when he signed his name on the divorce papers.

But with Andrea’s appearance… he doesn’t exactly “trust” her given how they haven’t been in contact in years, but his sisters reconnected with her in recent years. He frowned. What would his sisters say? He shook his head. Never mind. They’re both old already. They can figure things out by themselves.

When she exited his office, he immediately confirmed with his secretary her contact details. Of course, it’s on the proposal she left as well. Huh. On that same paper, he started outlining his needs and conditions. And of course, what he can offer to make her agree.

When Andrea received a call two days later, asking her to visit Mr. Wayne Anderson’s office, she was more than thrilled. She grabbed the newest proposal she started working on. It was only a very rough draft, but the proposals she’s making are based on her father’s previous businesses, so… it wasn’t that hard, but it was still hard.

She was too cheerful for his liking. She showed up with a very bright smile on her face and greeted him excitedly. He let her talk first while he scrutinized her physical attributes. She’s not so bad.

Andrea started feeling differently, given the way he looked her over. Even so, she managed to continue and finish her delivery of information.

“So, what do you think?” She finally asked.

Wayne showed a nonchalant reaction before standing up and moving around the table. He sat across her on the couch.

“I can agree to your previous proposal and help you make it better. Make sure it’s successful…” He noticed the way her face brightened and her smile widened.

“But…” He let that hang between them.

Andrea almost wanted to pout, but she’s no longer twenty. She’s already thirty.

“But…?” She knew he wanted her to prompt him and raised an eyebrow.

His gaze unsettled her a little. It was the same look when she entered his office the first time. Two days ago.

“I have my own conditions. A separate proposal. If you agree to my terms, I can accept the second proposal you brought today as well.”

Andrea narrowed her eyes on him. He’s got a proposal for her? Is there anything she can help him with? That’s highly doubtful.

“What are your conditions?” Nevertheless, she’s curious to know what this man would want from her. She reached into the glass of water served by his secretary.

“Marry me.”

He stated that without any emotion. A blank expression on his face. He only glanced at her for two seconds before he looked outside the window.

Andrea felt like she was hearing things. No way would those words come out from a man like him.

“Did you say something?” She asked, carefully taking a sip. She’s a bit intimidated by him, but recalling his past self was enough to calm her nerves. She has a few stories of him that he wouldn’t want to be reminded of. It was a little funny to her.

He reached into a folder containing a document he personally prepared.

“These are my terms.” He handed her the folder and she accepted.

See? She must’ve spaced out for a moment there.

She lightly coughed and set the glass down when the title of the document jumped to her. She scanned the bold sub-headings as well.

Marriage Agreement? Arrangement? Requirements? Terms and Conditions?

She flipped to count the pages. Four of them.

“Did you give me the correct document? This says Marriage Agreement.”

He studied her for a minute and his gaze made her feel small.

“You need something from me. I need something from you. It should be a fair trade.”

“You need something from me? You want to marry me?” She blinked, not quite understanding. She’s not delusional enough to think he likes her or something. She simply couldn’t believe it.

“Yes. You marry me and I’ll help you and your family.”

Boy, that was tempting. Recalling his earlier statement, he’s willing to help out with the two proposals she brought.

“Are you romantically involved with someone?” Seeing her hesitation, he was reminded of one question he forgot to consider. What if she already has someone she wants to marry? Well, that stumped him now.

Andrea pursed her lips, her eyes travelled to the right before returning his gaze.

“No, there’s no one. Why, though?” Her expression showed her interest.

Wayne heaved a sigh of relief at hearing her answer. Good, that one obstacle is out of the way.

Chapter 3 – The Proposal

Andrea’s aware of his past marriage. He hasn’t been involved with anyone after his divorce. At least, not one that has been reported on the news. She did read up on his latest news when she considered asking him for help, just to get a feel of what he’s like at the moment.

“Since you’re not currently involved with anyone, this might not be unappealing to you. Read it.” He languidly sat on the couch, stretching his right arm on the backrest.

Must he be so overbearing? She’s more interested in the “why” than the “what”.

As she looked at the document, she took some time to think about the situation. Why would he propose such a thing? He’d been married before. If she were him, she might completely vow never to marry again. She’d been in failed relationships and she’s almost close to becoming a cynic. Yeah, sometimes she would think that finding a person who you can have a prior agreement before getting married is a better way to ensure the success of a relationship. Well, technically, that’s what dating is for. And yet, so many people are dishonest and manipulative. You couldn’t fully trust anyone.

It’s a real commitment. Her lip twitched at the agreement she’s holding. Would he sue her if she violates his terms? Oh wait, she hasn’t agreed yet.

Engagement period of three months up to six months. Oh, look. It wasn’t entirely a shotgun wedding.

She stole a glance at him. He’s not entirely unreasonable at this whole thing. She does know his family. What would Aria and Annie say if she suddenly marries their brother? Huh. The engagement period would be helpful. They can make things up. They can say they dated or something. She can straight up lie and say she likes him a lot, which isn’t hard to believe. He would have a harder time convincing his family that he likes her. If she remembers correctly, his mother is quite traditional. A very gentle woman.

Requirements. Fidelity. Honesty. Responsibility. She held her head in one hand, slowly massaging her temple.

“Shouldn’t you properly explain what you meant by these? Requirements. These are your expectations? Fidelity? You want your wife to be faithful. To what extent? Not meeting other men? Not having male friends? Never going on a date with another, or even a simple meeting or outing. Would you even allow your wife to greet people?”

“I’m not that unreasonable. But I would require the highest form of care and discretion. You can’t be seen alone with another man. The rumors will be bad enough. You’ll most likely be compared to my last wife. I assume you know about that?”

“Yes, I’m aware. But why the need to marry? Is it something you actually want?” Her question stumped him again.

In a way, he’s still a man. Despite his past experience… yes, he wanted a family. But currently, he’s not looking forward to it. He’s still cautious. But his mom…

“My mother wants me to get married. She wants grandchildren. She thinks enough time has passed and I should try again.”

Andrea slowly digested that. He’s thirty-five. Not exactly young, but for a man, it’s not that late to get married. Some even get married in their early forties.

“But…” She was about to ask something unnecessary. Clearly, he isn’t exactly ready to try again. He’s going about it like another business deal. She can relate. She’d imagined that a few times.

“But why me?” She changed her question.

It was the first time she’d seen Wayne shrug. After a long time, anyway. Those broad shoulders… he grew up so well.

“Like what you see?” He raised an eyebrow, noticing the way her gaze travelled through every part of his body.

She lightly coughed, “You didn’t answer the question.”

“My family knows you. It would be much easier to say that we reconnected or something, than to convince them that I fell in love with a random woman who they might not like.”

That’s… reasonable. Though she reconnected with his sisters, she hadn’t been to see their parents.

“Did you think I would agree?”

“You need something from me. It’s a case of give and take.”

Well, there’s the catch. But does she desperately need him? She bit her lip. If she’s to think of only herself, she’s doing okay. She’s able to provide for her needs. As for her parents… everyday a creditor comes or calls. Her father’s soft heart couldn’t bear to let others suffer because of him.

She lifted her eyes and stared straight into his.

“Other than the proposals and turning them into actual successful businesses, can you lend me money?” Then, she went on to talk about the creditors and how she can’t bear to see her father agonizing over it.

“I can give you money. If you agree, I’ll see to it that all of your father’s debts are settled.” It would seem she’s going to be agreeable. He studied her profile.

She hadn’t read the rest of the document yet.

“Before you think about agreeing, I suggest you completely read the document. If there’s anything you feel you can’t agree to, then… I don’t think we should proceed.”

“Not negotiable at all?” She fingered the edge of the first page as she continued to read, as he so kindly reminded her.

“Ask if you have any questions.”

The corners of her mouth twitched again at how detailed he is. Basically, he’s asking for a wife who would do everything he says. His demands are quite… reasonable, if she says so herself. Things she might demand from someone she would be in a relationship with… right.

“Is this mutual? If I demand the same things from you… except the financial part, of course. I don’t have the money.” Would he…?

“Of course.” He readily agreed. Wow.

“You won’t be seen with another woman?” She glanced at the list of terms.

“I won’t.” His expression speaks volume. Andrea assumes he’s not in any way interested in women at the moment.

“Hmm… that’s good, then.” She continued her perusal of the pages.

“I will be free to pursue my own career. If I choose to help my father in restarting those businesses I proposed…?”

“Go ahead.”

“But you will help, right?”

“I will.” He has enough assistants to do that, but he does review each project.

“You will support me, financially. But I would be borrowing a large sum from the beginning. Can you deduct a portion of that from this monthly support you included, as my repayment?”

“Sure.” He’s not about to tell her that she’ll be receiving so much more, but let’s not scare the woman away, Wayne reminded himself. He deliberately did not include the exact figure he’s thinking of giving her. He’d have to evaluate her first. At most, as a person who’s having financial difficulty, she’d have appreciation for money and would have known proper budgeting. She’s a business person as well.

Since he hadn’t been involved with any woman in recent years, he’s not aware of the current cost of keeping a woman. He merely thought of an estimate based on what he knows women normally purchase in excessive amounts. A couple of billions a year should be enough. If she haggles, he can double that amount. But of course, he’s going to wait and see. The first proposal she brought, the capital requirement was only ten million. How does she expect to earn millions and billions if the scale is too small? He’d ordered one of his assistants to look into the history of their family business. He might see some relevant information in there.

Andrea still couldn’t believe it. Their problems would be solved, just like that. Was it too big of a sacrifice on her part? Not… really. She slowly answered her own question. She does not have the time to look for a man and get into a relationship in the last few months. That’s not going to change anytime soon. What Wayne is offering is too good. What he’s asking for isn’t so bad. Her main concern is… commitment.

“It says here that you will refuse a divorce?” That was… she couldn’t understand the reason.

“In the event that you violate any of my conditions, if you break my trust, you lose it. I would not be made into a laughingstock a second time. It will be your punishment. We will separate, but we will not divorce. If our marriage agreement fails, I doubt I will try a third time. As for you, even if you choose another man over me, you cannot be happily married.”

She showed him an expression of incredulity. Was it necessary to go to such extent? It was spiteful. She mulled over it. Well, maybe if she’s in his position… she would want some sort of preventive measures in place as well. What she didn’t like about it is how it seems so manipulative.

She grunted, the whole document is manipulative. She would be surrendering her life to him if she agrees, though he inserted clauses on which aspects she can have reign over.

Then, she came across the section about marital relations. Wayne watched as her face turned red. He almost smiled at how flustered she looks.

It says she can’t refuse if he wants to have sex with her. She searched her mind. She has no idea what he’s like as a lover. Is he the type to force a woman? She wore a curious expression before glancing at him. She gulped as she found him looking at her.

“Questions?” He prompted, knowing she must have one. He leaned on the other side of the couch and propped his head on one hand.

“Have you ever forced a woman to sleep with you?” She hurriedly asked.

Ah, yes. He might have chosen the wrong words. He shook his head once. “Never.” He didn’t bother explaining further than that.

“Say if I’m not feeling well, or I’m tired… you won’t force me, would you? Have you ever been violent…? I mean, physically hurt someone? A woman?” Though she carefully worded those questions, his answering glare was enough.

“Forget I asked. Of course, you wouldn’t.” She immediately answered her own questions before hiding her face with the document. The next part was about getting pregnant and giving him kids. Her body heated up at the thought. At her age, she’d thought of becoming a mother a few times. Of course, she wanted to have kids. But she needed a responsible man for that. Hmm, maybe Wayne isn’t a bad choice? He’s definitely responsible.

She’d realized that as one grows up, the reality of life is entirely different from what one imagines.

Chapter 4 - Agreement

Andrea bit her lip as she continued to read. Treatment of in-laws. She would move in with him as soon as she agrees, even before the wedding. Hmm… he said none are negotiable. Well, stump!

Household conduct. Facilities. Properties. Prenup Agreement. Well, he must need that one. She’s no one whereas he’s this tycoon ruling the business world. No divorce. No settlement upon separation.

Acts that are considered cheating. She decided to confirm her understanding of each one. As expected, he’s not unreasonable. Of course, she has male friends! Those shouldn’t be counted against her.

“What do you think?” He asked while glancing at his wrist watch.

Subconsciously, she looked down at her own. Well, she might’ve taken much of his time. If she’s not mistaken, she’d been here for more than an hour already.

Wayne cleared his afternoon schedule just for this, but he’s simply used to working every single day that he’s itching to move over to his desk. He didn’t mean to make her feel unwelcome.

“I’m fine with everything, I guess.” She scanned the document again.

“These… acts during the dating period. When is the dating period, exactly?”

He took a moment before answering, “Right. How about two months of dating and then four months of engagement? It might seem too short of a time, but since we already know each other before… it wouldn’t be too suspicious.”

“You specifically mentioned a first date. Me visiting your office a couple of times a week. What are these for?” She’s curious, not quite grasping the implications yet. It’s not that she’s stupid, but things are just going too fast right now.

“I have to convince my parents that this isn’t… what it is. Not a marriage of convenience. Not a contractual marriage. You and I should be able to make them believe that we do have feelings for each other, regardless of the truth. You coming to my office, we can say that’s how we reconnected. Not too far from the truth. Our first date. That’s how we started a romantic relationship.”

Ah, of course. He does things for a reason. Everything will be done for a reason.

“I see. I understand now.” Truth be told, she didn’t want to tell her parents that she’ll be marrying someone because of… money? She’s not exactly after his money but for his help. With the businesses…

Two months of dating is acceptable. She’d introduced someone to her parents within that timeframe after meeting someone. Before, that is. Though, that didn’t end well.

She tapped her fingers upon the documents.

“I agree, then.” This is an opportunity of a lifetime; Andrea knows that much. He’s a very eligible bachelor and many women want him.

Wayne raised an eyebrow. He didn’t think he would be able to convince her today. At most, he expected her to ask for some time to think about it. Well, he won’t say he’s not satisfied with her decision.

Truth be told, there are a slew of things they haven’t talked about but they would slowly discuss them in the coming weeks or months.

“I’ll have one of my assistants help you with the first proposal. As for this agreement, you can sign it now if you truly agree. Then, we can proceed.”

In that second, it suddenly seemed real to Andrea. Her heart thumped loudly against her chest. Oh dear, did she actually agree to this… arrangement? There were only a few seconds of hesitation before she took out her pen and signed on the bar reserved for her signature.

“I won’t be furnishing you with a copy of this, but should you need to review or go over them again, feel free to visit my office.”

“Of course.” She nodded, knowing this agreement couldn’t be leaked outside. The reporters would have a field day. Not only them. His competitors would relish in his embarrassment.

“Tell my secretary to get Jay for you.”

“Okay.” She stood up at the same time he did.

“Since you already signed…” He stepped around the small table between them and stood in front of her. He’s quite taller than she expected. She had to tilt her head back a little. The action was welcome. Wayne reached a hand into her nape and swiftly pressed a kiss on her lips.

He studied her face for a minute longer. “Let’s just say we sealed it with a kiss, as Aria would put it.”

Andrea actually smiled at the way he grumbled about his sister. When his gaze turned scorching, her smile faltered. His hold on her neck remained, then she felt him pulling her forward. Her gasp allowed him to invade inside her mouth. She’s unsure where to put her hands. When the kiss continued to deepen, she slowly rested her hands on his chest. She was embarrassed when she let out a moan. His tongue explored everywhere it could reach. She felt his other hand holding her waist and her body was pressed against his. He stood firm and strong. When she allowed her own tongue to explore, he caught it and sucked on it. She opened her eyes in surprise. Her reaction didn’t escape him. He let it go and sucked on her lips before stepping back. She was panting and her body trembled a little. That kiss made her feel weak. Her legs definitely are.

“What… was that for?” She asked, somewhat absentmindedly.

“We’ll start dating. Soon, we’ll get married. Later, we’ll make babies. Of course, we should kiss.”

His explanation made her gulp. He just mentioned making babies with a straight face.

“Okay.” Is there anything else she could say? The thing is… the kiss made her feel things. They haven’t talked about emotions, only commitment. Seeing him now this close, and after such a breathtaking kiss… it would be all too easy to fall for him.

“You have my number. Call me if you need anything.” He stated before moving away, back to his desk and his mountain of documents. He threw the document she signed into a drawer in his desk before locking it.

After blinking a few times, she hurriedly took her bag and said her goodbye. Outside his office, she asked the secretary for Jay. Is he a man? Maybe his employees are exceptions to his demands?

Or so she thought. Jay happens to be gay and he acted very friendly. For a moment, she couldn’t wrap up her mind around the fact that Wayne Anderson has such an assistant. Jay noticed her zoning out and flicked her forehead.

“Girl, stop thinking about useless things. Boss doesn’t care about those.”

“Oh, okay. I’m sorry. What did you mean you’ve found places?” They’ve been discussing the first proposal. Originally, what she made was a small inn with a diner. Wayne wants it to be a hotel and restaurant. A new chain, perhaps.

“What the…?”

After Jay explained his boss’ instructions, Andrea dropped her jaws to the ground.

“I can’t handle a scale that large.” If she’s to manage such a business, she feels she won’t be reliable. She doesn’t have the experience.

“Don’t worry. You have me. You have the boss. There are a lot of people he can order around. Of course, from what I hear, you’ll get to order his people around as well.”

“What did you hear?”

“That boss plans to marry you? Is this the dowry?” He pointed to the proposal and Andrea frowned. She blushed a little, too. It’s starting to feel more real every minute.

What dowry? Does such thing still exist today? She knows the concept, of course. If she thinks about it, then… yeah, it could be some sort of remuneration for agreeing to marry him.

Wayne’s secretary is a married older woman. She was polite even from the first time Andrea came to meet Wayne. She wasn’t judgmental.

Hmm, what to call him? Calling him by his first name… she’s used to it from the time they were kids. Still… should she use an endearment? Dear, perhaps? Damn. She shivered just thinking about it.

Jay didn’t comment on everything he observed. He didn’t try to pry more information about her relationship with the boss as well. He was simply guiding her through the revised plan for the proposal.

“The thing is… this business is supposed to be for my father. A family business. My father is used to managing small ones. He did manage three businesses at once. Before. But I’m really doubtful if we can… I’m sure the capitalization increased as well. How much would this require?” She suddenly realized another issue.

“Well, if it’s like that… how about if your father is only to supervise the operations? It shouldn’t be too hard or taxing. Boss has a lot of competitive and reliable people to do whatever job your father needs. He will be well-informed of everything. If problems come up, he’ll be consulted but we’ve already experienced almost everything so we usually know what to do in a certain situation. He can relax. He can go and meet the employees, the clients… I know older people feel the need to remain helpful and busy. They need something to do, be active… there’s a lot he can do around. Does he like talking to people?”

He said a lot in a funny way so she can’t help chuckling. She feels at ease.

Chapter 5 – Scheduling a First Date

It was a bad idea to kiss her. Wayne realized as he glanced at the closed door of his office. She tasted sweet and he relished in the way she responded to him.

When he was forming the contract in his mind, he thought he might as well satisfy his physical needs. She would be his wife, anyway, so kissing and having sex should be normal. He would admit that she’s attractive and he was attracted. At least, physically.

But that kiss… he hasn’t engaged in bedroom activities since the divorce. He was fairly disgusted with women at that point and didn’t want anything to do with them. It worked well for his business as he shifted all his attention to that. How long was it since he enjoyed a woman’s body and relished in carnal pleasures?

Six months would be too long, he groaned as he realized that now.

The plan has been set in motion. His sisters know she’d come to see him. He’d let her visit his office a few more times before they go on their first date. He called his secretary in to ask what kind of first date would suit him or what would be preferable to supposedly sweep someone off their feet. It was just for show, but he’s very attentive to details. If they’re to convince his family that their relationship is legit, they would have to take proper measures. She seemed to understand earlier, but in any case, he would clearly discuss it to her at a later date.

Tina suggested that booking an entire place would be what’s expected from his status. At least, that’s what women on the internet are saying to be their ideal date with a wealthy bachelor.

Do men of wealth actually do such a thing? Even Wayne had to ask. What he realized when he started earning more and more is that he becomes more reluctant to spend his money. Unless it’s to expand his businesses. That’s how he keeps becoming richer. Still, money is meant to be spent. Women appreciates gifts and grand gestures. Alright. He gave Tina instructions on how to go about it.

Andrea went to his company a few times in the weeks after their agreement. She busily worked with Jay until they managed to finalize the initial plan. Normally, she would quickly see Wayne at the end of her visits to update him and express her gratitude before leaving. They hadn’t kissed again after the first one.

It didn’t bother her as much as she initially thought. Or so she thought. It was when Aria asked to meet that she’s suddenly reminded of who Wayne was. She hadn’t considered what her friends would think.

When she reached the café, Aria was already seated and waiting for her. She was still as bubbly as ever. Andrea suddenly felt nervous. She couldn’t look her in the eye and she stuttered. Boy was she so obvious? She almost wanted to say bye and go hide.

Aria noticed her odd behavior and frowned. She acts like she’s guilty of something. What could Andrea do to make her like this? As she’s used to being direct, she figured the same approach would work well in this situation.

“Alright, spill. What are you hiding? You can’t even look at me.” She kept trying to catch her sight, but with her statement, Andrea finally looked at her. Her expression was so apologetic.

“I’m sorry.” Andrea stated. How to say it? Did Wayne tell her that they should keep it a secret for now? No, there wasn’t anything like that. He did say they should make it as convincing as possible, for his mother.

“What are you sorry about?” Now she’s curious. Between the two of them, it was Aria who would do something that irritates people. Normally, she’s late. She has a sharp tongue. She doesn’t censor her words. It’s always expected that she would be misunderstood.

How to open this topic? Andrea searched her mind but nothing. She bit her lip as she stayed silent. When so much time has passed already, with the silence between them, Aria decided to let it go for now.

She shrugged it off, “If it’s difficult to say, it’s fine. Tell me when you’re ready.”

Andrea smiled at her. “Thank you.”

This time she’s able to look at her friend. In a way, oddly, she can now see the resemblance between her and her brother.

Aria decided a change of topic is in order. What else could they talk about aside from their careers and prior experiences?

“Right. Have you been to see my brother? How did it go? Did he agree to help you?”

At the mention of her brother, Andrea wanted to cry. She was just hoping to avoid this topic for now. How did it suddenly become the focus? She was flustered and Aria’s eyes widened at her reaction.

“It has something to do with my brother, isn’t it? What did he do?” Now she’s curious. Wayne has become an enigma to his family in recent years. That is, after his divorce. The family doesn’t blame him. If anything, it was that shameless woman’s fault. Still, the scandal was spread widely and it embarrassed the whole family. He has chosen to distance himself from the rest of them.

Andrea’s face reddened at recalling the contents of the contract, and of course, their kiss. It was almost consuming.

“Oh, this I must know. What happened?” Aria watched with wide eyes.

She knew she should say something, otherwise, who knew what things could get inside Aria’s head?

“Well, uhm… he agreed to help me. I’ve been to his company a few times and he assigned someone to work with me. It’s all going well.”

The truth, but that doesn’t explain why she’s flustered.

“Uh huh, and then?” Aria wasn’t exactly positive that her brother would help Andrea. She just tried. But what she said shouldn’t make her flustered.

“Well, uhm…” Her gaze wouldn’t meet hers again.

“Wait, wait, wait… why are you like this? I’m about to assume that you two… did something happen between the two of you?” Her eyes remained wide and her lip twitched. She slightly shook her head. Wait. Andrea and Wayne? Well, they were quite close when they were kids. Looking at Andrea, she’s definitely beautiful.

“What did my brother do?” She’s not interested to know what her brother does with women but this is her friend.

Before she misunderstands, Andrea decided she can tell her about the kiss. She wouldn’t be able to face her friend if she thinks they did more than that.

“It was just a kiss!” She finally confessed while turning even redder.

Aria had her mouth open in surprise. Damn, that was unexpected. Wait, is it?

“It’s… uhm…” What else can she say? Andrea should’ve thought this through before meeting her. Who knew she couldn’t even bring herself to hide?

“Wait, wait, wait… so you went to meet him?”

“Yes.”

“He agreed to help you?”

“Yes.”

“You’ve been to his office a few times?”

“Uh huh.”

“He kissed you?”

Andrea bit her lip again before nodding.

“Wow…”

Wait, her reaction doesn’t seem like she’s angry. Andrea glanced at her.

Wow? What does she mean with that?

“What should I do?” Instead of asking what Aria is feeling, she thought it would be best to ask her for advice. If she says to stay away, then that means she doesn’t like her for her brother. Wait, she already agreed to him. Would he allow her to back out?

“What do you mean? What are you asking?” Aria wasn’t expecting that question.

“Well, he is your brother.”

“And so?”

“What do you think I should do? Stay away? Keep going? But he’s helping me, so…”

“Wait, wait, wait…” Aria organized her thoughts.

After a while she asked again, “He kissed you?”

“Yes.” This… how many times would she be asked this question?

“Did he force you or something?” By the way Andrea was asking her, Aria can’t fathom why she would be asking what she should do.

“Well, no… he didn’t ask but…” How to say it? It wasn’t unwelcome? Her eyes riveted left and right as she searched for the right word.

“Did you like the kiss? Do you even like him?”

“Well… yes.” She could only admit. And it’s the truth as well. Frankly, she didn’t need to fake liking him. He’s a very attractive man.

“And…?”

Andrea frowned, finally staring at her. “And?”

“The second question? Do you like him?”

She blushed again and that was answer enough. Aria sighed before shrugging.

“Well… it’s not my place to say anything. I can only assume that he won’t have kissed you if he doesn’t like you. He didn’t ask for anything weird after agreeing to help you, did he?”

“No, nothing like that.” She lied and it seemed normal. It was not proper to say bad things about him. When she thought about it, she feels that she should protect him. That was weird. She can’t let others spread rumors or talk badly about him. What was it he wrote? A virtuous wife.

Aria shrugged again before taking a bite out of a donut.

Andrea reached for her glass of cold coffee.

“I mean… would you…” In the end, she couldn’t ask anything and simply sighed. They were silent for some time.

When her phone rang, she scrambled to take it out of her bag. She froze when his name showed on screen.

“Aren’t you going to answer?” Aria asked, having heard it ring for too long. It would be disconnected soon and it did.

“Why didn’t you answer?”

“Uh, nothing. Must be a wrong number.” Andrea replied but then the phone rang again.

She quickly answered and turned to her side.

“Yes?”

Wayne stated an establishment and its address. “If you can’t come to my office on Friday afternoon, meet me there.”

“What’s up with the place?” She whispered.

“Why are you whispering?” He noticed the way her voice changed.

She cleared her throat before using her natural voice. “Nothing. I’m outside, so…”

“Would you be available on Friday?”

“Friday? This Friday?” What’s the situation? Are they meeting investors?

“Yes.”

“Of course, what time should I show up?”

Aria listened to her side of the conversation and noticed how strange it was.

“That’s not my brother, is it?” Her voice floated into the call.

“Who’s that?” Wayne couldn’t place the voice but he heard someone talk.

“I’m with Aria.” She grimaced as Aria grinned.

“I see.”

Andrea waited for him to say more or maybe greet his sister but he merely hung up.

Wait, what just happened?

“What was it about?”

“I’m not sure. I think we’ll be meeting investors. You know, for my business proposal.”

“Uh huh, doesn’t sound like it.” She took out her own phone and dialed Wayne’s number.

“What?” He wasn’t very friendly when answering her calls.

“Are you going out with Andrea on Friday?”

Wayne could almost picture what happened when she mentioned she’s with his sister.

“That’s none of your business.”

“Uh huh, she thinks you’ll be meeting investors, though. Is she right?”

“What investors?” He hung up on her and left Aria dumbfounded.

Andrea couldn’t help giggling at her reaction. Then, her phone rang again.

“Yes?” She remained polite in answering his calls.

“We’re going on a date.” He flatly informed her.

“What?” But he already hung up even before she could ask. Her mind was spinning as she stared at her phone. It was Aria’s turn to giggle.

“What did he say? Was it a meeting with investors?” She already knew the answer, though. She’s only teasing.

“Uh, no.” When she shook her head a little, Aria openly chuckled.

“Did he say something so hard to believe? He asked you out on a date, didn’t he?”

Despite not answering, Aria continued.

“I’m guessing he only informed you and wasn’t asking. I hope you don’t mind and still go. My brother could be eccentric.”

“You don’t mind if I go?” The reasoning behind her question was simple. Andrea wasn’t about to choose him over her friends. If Aria says to stop seeing him, she would do so.

“Why not? Maybe you’ll do my whole family a favor if you do date him.”

Her lip twitched at her statement.

And so, Aria offered to answer any questions she may have about her brother. Yes, she’s about ready to sell him off. To be honest, Andrea’s mostly concerned about his dating life.

“Nah. We think the divorce affected him very much. We haven’t heard him get involved with anyone after that. Maybe he’s recovered. It’s been years already.”

“I see…” She was about to ask about his previous marriage but she didn’t think it would be appropriate at this point. They’re just starting to date.

Aria, too. Whatever his plan was, she didn’t want to sabotage his brother. She was careful not to talk about his failures in that marriage. She didn’t want to scare Andrea away, in case Wayne actually likes her and there’s a chance they could work out being together.
